I know, I know… it’s only September, but I’m already thinking of all the cozy fall outfits I’m going to put together as soon as the weather gets colder. That’s why I decided to knit up Emma’s Scarf, a lovely fall weather accessory made of the squishiest fisherman’s rib stitch.

I am a great lover of all fall and winter accessories. Give me all the hats, mittens, cowls… AND SCARVES. I love scarves. Not only do they keep your face and neck warm, but they instantly elevate an outfit.

This pattern is knit on the bias, meaning that it starts at a corner, increases to the main width of the scarf, and then continues with increases and decreases to form the length of the scarf. Lastly, you decrease in both corners to end the scarf.

This scarf is knit in fisherman’s rib stitch, creating a squishy texture that mimics brioche. This texture is created by knitting into the row below in a rib pattern on right side rows and then simply knitting across on wrong side rows. Although this two-row repeat technique may seem complicated at first, I promise it’s not. In fact, after you get the hang of it, I find it absolutely addicting!
Materials:
The yarn I used is recycled lamb’s wool that I bought a while ago from a seller on etsy, NaturalRecycledYarn (https://www.etsy.com/shop/NaturalRecycledYarn?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=1447488112)
I love the color so much — it’s a deep maroon color that is dark purple-pink. I held two strands double to knit up the scarf.
In general, I would recommend using a fingering weight wool yarn for this pattern if you want to achieve the same look as me. However, you could use any yarn you’d like!
I also used 3.5 mm needles, but use the needle size that corresponds to your yarn weight.
Abbreviations:
Since this pattern is knit in fisherman’s rib stitch, there are some unique abbreviations you should know. If you’re confused, I go over all the stitches in the youtube video below!
K1B: knit one below (knit into the stitch of the row below).
P/YO/P: purl, yarn over without slipping stitch off needle, purl (all into the same stitch). This is an increase stitch.
DECL: decrease left. First, slip a stitch knitwise with yarn in back. Then, lift the next stitch and the stitch below onto the needle in your left hand. Then, knit this double stitch together with the next stitch. Finally, pass the slipped stitch over the decreased stitch.
DECR: decrease right. First, slip a stitch knitwise with yarn in back. Then, lift the next stitch and the stitch below onto the needle in your left hand. Then, slip the slipped stitch onto your left hand needle as well. Then, knit the slipped stitch and the double stitch together through the back loop. Then, slip this decreased stitch back onto the left hand needle. Finally, slip the next stitch over the decreased stitch and place the final stitch onto the needle in your right hand.
For the pattern, if you would like to make your scarf wider (or less wide) simply repeat the increasing rows more or fewer times. Also, length is entirely up to preference!
