Chunky Winter Cowl: Free Crochet Pattern

This chunky winter cowl is so huge and cozy! I love the feeling of the thick yarn, especially around my neck. It’s so nice and warm, especially in winter months!

Here I matched this chunky cowl with another one of my free patterns: the 1 Hour Easy Pretty Winter Hat.

This cowl is made using chunky yarn. I used merino wool for super warmth, but any chunky yarn will do. Here is the yarn I used:

You only need one skein- an extra bonus!

Now, let’s get into the details of this cowl. I made a little embellishment about halfway through that you could decorate with beads, but if you are looking for a simpler pattern, I’d stick with the same stitch throughout. This will be explained more when we get into details about the pattern.

So, grab your yarn and a size 8 hook! Time to crochet!

We’ll be using these stitches:

Half double crochet stitch (hdc) : yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through three remaining stitches.

Half double crochet in back loops only (hdc in BLO) : hdc stitch into back loop of chain.

  1. Ch 24
  2. Hdc in every chain from hook
  3. *Ch 2
  4. Hdc in BLO in every chain from hook*
  5. Repeat * – * (steps 3-4) 11 more times

Now, either follow the embellishment directions or continue with Hdc in BLO for 6 more rows.

Embellishment directions

This uses Sc in BLO, which is the single crochet stitch in back loops only (insert hook into back loop of stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through all stitches on hook.) It also uses cross hdc. You can find tutorials on this stitch on youtube.

  • Hdc in every chain from hook
  • Ch 1
  • Sc in BLO in every chain from hook
  • Ch 2
  • Cross hdc in every chain from hook
  • Ch 2
  • Cross hdc in BLO in every chain from hook
  • Ch 2
  • Cross hdc in every chain from hook
  • Ch 1
  • Sc in BLO in every chain from hook

Now, continue with steps 6 through 12. Everyone follows these steps, regardless of embellishments.

6. Ch 2

7. Hdc in every chain from hook

8. *Ch 2

9. Hdc in BLO in every chain from hook*

10. Repeat * – * (steps 8-9) 7-10 more times, depending on how tight/loose you like your cowl. I like mine tight for warmth, so I did 8.

11. Slip stitch across the other side of cowl to connect both sides. Insert hook into opposite stitch, yarn over, pull through all stitches on hook. Repeat across the sides until it has become a cowl.

12. Fasten off and weave in ends.

And you’re done! This chunky, cozy cowl is something you won’t want to leave home with! I hope you all liked this pattern.

Another picture taken after the snow!

Enjoy this comfy cowl. Happy Crocheting!
