BEGINNER Beanie: Free Crochet Pattern

This Comfy Slouch/Beanie Hat was an instant hit with everyone I know. It can be customized in so many ways to fit you- or whoever you’re making it for! This hat has a ribbed band to add a bit of style to your outfit, too.

By folding up the brim, this hat becomes a beanie!

I made the stitch count smaller to fit children, though the pattern included is for adult sizes. This hat is great because you can make it a slouch or a beanie hat interchangeably! By folding up the brim, your hat becomes shorter and rounder- the beanie. By leaving the brim down and having the extra long back of the hat droop behind your head, your hat becomes the elongated, modern, elegant slouch hat.

So, let’s get started!

Grab your yarn, crochet hook, and a cup of tea. I used Bernat Softee chunky yarn for this particular hat. I recommend using a thinner yarn than I used because the thick yarn makes the hat stiffer, which is not ideal for slouch. If you want to make a beanie, then thicker yarn would be fine, but definitely use thinner yarn and a narrower hook if you want the slouchy look. I haven’t actually tried this pattern with thinner yarn, but I think the result will be really rewarding (though you should probably make more hdc rows during the slouch part).

Materials

As for crochet hooks, I used a size ten bamboo hook- I bought a set of different sized crochet hooks and I switch them out depending on which project I’m working on. Again, if you are using thinner yarn (recommended), then use a narrower hook that matches it.

Yarn Used: Bernat Softee (Color Cream), one – two skeins needed

Crochet Hook Size: 10

Stitches Used: Single crochet in back loops only (sc in BLO), half double crochet (hdc), and Dc2tog.

I have tutorials on all these stitches on my blog if you need them.

Timing: About 3 hours, max

Level: Beginner-Intermediate

This hat matches with any outfit!

That’s it for this pattern. It’s relatively simple, but the outcome is definitely worth the work.
