Ribbed Fingerless Mittens: Free Knitting Pattern

I am the BIGGEST fan of fingerless mittens. Going for a walk but need to use my phone? Fingerless mitts. Chilly at home, but working on the computer? Fingerless mitts. Fingerless mitts are my best friends all throughout fall and winter, and I finally decided it was time to make my own version.

These ribbed fingerless mittens are easy to wear, super comfy and warm, and knit up SO FAST. I knitted this pair in a few evenings! They would make the perfect gift knits.

Although this pattern is written for my size, I have written in adjustments to make it for larger/smaller hands. I have smaller hands, so keep that in mind if you follow the numbers I used.

Also: I am in LOVE with the color of these knits. It’s not often that I splurge on hand-dyed yarn, but I ended up buying this yarn for a gift knit last year and I’m so glad I did. The green with lighter speckles gives this simple pattern such an aesthetic appeal.

Materials:

Any kind of yarn (I used a DK/worsted weight wool yarn).

Needle size: 4.5 mm

Note: If you follow the numbers in the pattern below, you will get mittens that should fit small adult hands/teenage hands. To make them larger/smaller, either use the made-to-measure adjustments embedded in the pattern OR change needle size.

I HIGHLY recommend sizing up to 5mm needles if you have average/slightly larger hands.

Pattern:

  1. CO 28 st (or any multiple of 4)
  2. Knit in 2×2 rib for 5 inches
  3. After a P2: M1R, K2, M1L, P2, M1R, K2, M1L (the M1R is now your beginning of round, set a BOR marker)
  4. Knit rest of round in 2×2 rib until BOR
  5. K4, P2, K4, continue in 2×2 rib until BOR
  6. K2, P1R, K2, P2, K2, P1R, K2, continue in 2×2 rib until BOR
  7. K2, P, K2, P2, K2, P, K2, continue in 2×2 rib until BOR
  8. K2, P, P1L, K2, P2, K2, P, P1L, continue in 2×2 rib until BOR
  9. 2×2 rib around
  10. K2, P2
  11. Slip next 6 stitches onto scrap yarn
  12. CO 2 (using backwards loop method)
  13. Knit rest of round in in 2×2 rib
  14. Continue in 2×2 rib until reaches desired length (about 1.5 inches) and then cast off (using stretchy method if desired, I just cast off normally)
  15. Pick up stitches on hold and pick up stitches around the thumb-hole (I picked up 6 stitches, but more may be better). Cast off all 12 (or more) stitches LOOSELY.

Weave in ends, your fingerless mitts are finished!
